Keeping stress down and energy up is especially important during pregnancy. Summer is a great time to unwind, yet it can also end up being busy! Be sure to schedule some much needed self-care time throughout your days to help set you up for success. These three approaches can revitalize, refresh, and support your system as it is working hard.
Prenatal yoga offers the benefits of keeping you limber and moving as your body shifts and changes. It’s basic elements, such as conscious breathing and slow, meditative postures can also be very grounding and restorative. (1)
Start with Breath Sit or lay comfortably and take slow, deep breathes
Offer a Meditative Affirmation for you, your body and your growing baby. Pregnancy affirmations can offer a sense of peace and internal support along your journey. Remember to ask for help from others when you need it as well!
Try reclining poses such as side-lying supported Savasana or Goddess Pose
When comfortable, branch out gently, perhaps with this lovely prenatal sequence
When you complete your practice, be sure to re-hydrate with filtered water and nourish your body with fresh whole foods.
Summer is ripe with fresh fruit options! Because limiting toxins is key to a healthy pregnancy, choose organic local produce as much as possible and do your best to stay away from the dirty dozen (conventional fruits which receive the most pesticide spray such as strawberries). Be sure to wash your fresh produce well, especially fresh greens like lettuce. (3) Some of the best fresh fruits (and why) are listed below:
Adding 2-4 apricots in a day give you and baby a fresh source of vitamins A,C,E, calcium and iron
Ripe and ready in the summer, bursting with Vitamin C to help relieve any constipation you may be experiencing.
This delicious snack is rich in B6 which is a de-stressor! Also a great source of manganese and potassium which help develop bone strength for your baby. (2) Be sure to choose organic strawberries, as conventional options are the #1 highest sprayed fruit.
Other great summer options for pregnancy include watermelon, blueberries, and bananas. See a full list here.
Nourish your body with movement, healthy food, plenty of water, and keep your joints and system supple with specified body work.
Reduce, ease, and prevent symptoms of your changing body (which commonly includes poor circulation, low back pain, sciatica, and headaches) with specialized treatment sessions of Chiropractic and Massage Therapy.
One of the reasons massage is so relaxing is that it reduces cortisol levels (stress hormones), it also helps soothe any muscle tension that may have accumulated during your pregnancy. (4) During Pregnancy Massage there are special accommodations for positioning to make sure you are comfortable. The treatment approach helps to alleviate the aches and pains of your changing ecosystem while ensuring safe and supportive care.
Chiropractors can anticipate, address, minimize and help prevent pain or discomfort due to the postural adaptations. Chiropractic care can also help you achieve balance during your pregnancy. Keeping the pelvis aligned is an important preventative measure to ensure plenty of room for your developing baby and helps to get your body in the best position for delivery.
